Our client are looking for an experienced Speech and Language Therapist to join their team on a full time basis.

Main duties and responsibilities:

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Be responsible for overseeing the Speech and Language Therapy team including rotas, division of clients and therapy sessions, professional development, supervision of the Speech and Language Therapy team members, conflict resolution within the team and between therapy teams, escalating as required to the Head of Rehabilitation.
  • To carry out highly specialist physical examination of the orofacial process including the mechanism of eating and swallowing.
  • To implement treatment programmes, goal and care plans to ensure the patient is cared for and an effective rehabilitation programme is implemented.
  • To monitor all aspects of interaction of others with clients in particular auditory, visual and kinaesthetic aspects of dyadic interactions, encouraging adaptive strategies, communication aids and electronic aids to maximise effective communication,
  • To prescribe appropriate equipment and educate clients in the safe use of this equipment, in order to maximise client’s independence 

Educational Responsibilities:

  • Act as a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist, providing education, training and advice to junior Speech and Language Therapists, Rehabilitation Assistants and staff from other disciplines through formal and informal training, advice and joint assessments.
  • Participate in the student placement programme, and following appropriate training, be responsible for student supervision and teaching.
  • Participate in clinical evaluation trials and audit.

Management Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for organising and prioritising own caseload and weekly calendar / rota preparation for junior therapists.  
  • Manage all junior Speech and Language Therapy staff, providing appropriate levels of supervision as required.
  • Responsible for monitoring progress on relevant clinical governance objectives and delegating tasks to junior staff members.

Professional Responsibilities:

  • Actively participate in both clinical and operational supervision sessions to identify and develop professional, clinical and service needs.
  • To have an advanced working knowledge of clinical guidelines including RCSLT and National Institute of Clinical Excellence Guidelines, relevant to Speech and Language therapist (especially in relation to neurological rehabilitation), to translate these guidelines into own practice and, through supervision and education, assist junior staff members to translate the guidelines into their practice.
  • To be responsible for recording your own statistics and ensuring junior members of staff are doing this in accordance with trust policy.

Effort and Environmental Factors:

  • Perform objective assessments of such things as swallow, speech, communication (verbal and non-verbal), cognitive tasks and so on.
  • Demonstrate compassion, empathy and sensitivity to patients who may have complex emotional and physical conditions such as fear of falling, anxiety, pain and other physical and social concerns requiring moderate emotional effort on a daily basis.
  • Perform tasks which require moderate to high mental effort on a daily basis, for example concentration to write letters, develop policies and presentations, use clinical analysis and reasoning skills to make diagnoses and develop appropriate treatment programmes and educate junior staff, colleagues and clients throughout the day.

Education and Qualifications:

  • HCPC registration
  • Diploma or degree in Speech and Language therapist.
  • Completed dysphagia training to an intermediate level.
  • Evidence of CPD relevant to the treatment of people with neurological disabilities.

Experience:

  • Experience at a senior level working with patients with acquired brain injury neurological conditions, including those with an acquired brain injury with swallowing and communication problems.
  • Experience working in community or outpatient rehabilitation.
  • Experience in supervising junior SLT’s and students.

Skills, knowledge and abilities:

  • Advanced skills in the assessment and treatment of people with acquired brain injury neurological conditions, including those with an acquired brain injury.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of complex neurological conditions that affect swallowing and communication and treatment approaches.
  • Knowledge of outcome measures and evidence-based practice associated with people with physical disabilities.
  • Advanced communication and report writing skills, in both verbal and written format.
  • An understanding of the importance of involving service users in their treatment and in service development.
